A Letter to the Artist Who’s Been Holding Back!
(for the musos, makers, feelers & quiet geniuses)
Hey you,
Yeah, you. The one who hasn’t posted in forever. The one feeling kind of flat, a bit over it all, and wondering what the hell the point is right now.
I get it. It’s the middle of winter and everything feels heavy and weird (hello winter blues)! You're tired of screens. Tired of pushing. Tired of the AI sludge taking over your feed. Honestly, you're just...OVER IT!
And still, here you are. Still wanting to make stuff. Still wanting to be seen. Still craving actual connection, even if social media feels like the last place to find it lately.
You’re not lazy. You’re not failing. You’re just a human in an overstimulated world that keeps asking us to behave like robots.
But you're not a robot. You're an artist.
You're allowed to unplug. You're allowed to go quiet. You're allowed to miss the simpler days and still want people to find your work.
That contradiction? Totally valid. You’re not alone in it.
To be honest, I constantly get the urge to delete all my social media. It’s a love-hate thing. It inspires me and drains me at the same time. Some days I want to throw my phone in the ocean...and other days, I’m genuinely grateful it lets me connect with other weird, creative people doing their thing. These platforms are necessary for any kind of business now — you have to move with the times. But I also totally get wishing it was like it used to be. The thing is though...it just isn’t.
So we adapt. We move with it, but stay grounded in who we are. We don’t have to be anyone else. We just have to stay connected and make work that means something. And share it in a way that feels human.
You don’t have to chase trends or lip sync for attention (unless you want to, then go off). You just need to show up as you. Real, in-progress, messy, honest and YOU!
Post something you love. Share what you're working on. Say it's been hard to stay motivated in the cold. Show your face...or don’t. Just make something. Anything. Brush off the dust.
Yes, the internet is noisy right now. But real art still cuts through!
Your music, your photos, your paintings, your perspective, your strange and brilliant brain — it still matters.
So if you’ve been hiding a little…SAME!
But maybe now’s a good time to stretch out, warm up, peek your head out. It doesn’t have to be big, it just has to be authentic.
We’re not waiting to be discovered. We’re just showing up when we can, in whatever way feels doable.
If the usual way isn’t working, switch it up. Try something totally different. But please, don’t shut the door on your art completely. I see so many amazing people just fading out, and that honestly sucks.
Your creativity is part of you. It doesn’t have to be perfect or go viral! It just has to be you — imperfect, brave and fearless.
So keep showing up however you can, even if it’s just for yourself. Because the world still needs your weird, wonderful voice…even on the days it feels like no one’s watching.
You’ve got this. Keep going.
